Super Shai strikes again: Blazing Nitura, Adamson bounce back, romps UE for win No. 2

MANILA, Philippines – Just three games into the UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball tournament, Shaina Nitura has proved that she’s far from a one-hit wonder after a historic 33-point debut.

Following a sweep loss to mighty La Salle, the Adamson Lady Falcons rose up with a vengeance as they walloped winless UE, 25-20, 25-15, 25-12, for a 2-1 record at the Mall of Asia Arena on Wednesday, February 26.

Nitura, who dropped 16 points against the Lady Spikers, dropped 18 more against the Lady Warriors off 16 attacks, 1 block, and 1 ace to go with 11 excellent digs.

“What I remind them of is most of the time, character is the one being tested in crucial moments,” Adamson head coach JP Yude said in Filipino.

“That’s what we’re working on because that’s what we lacked against La Salle during pressured moments, we can’t decide properly and can’t respond well to those situations. I reminded them of that and we worked on it.”

Nitura’s fellow newcomer and foreign student-athlete Frances Mordi scored 11 while Fhei Sagaysay tossed up 15 excellent sets in the match that saw Adamson explode to an insurmountable 15-4 third-set start that UE failed to recover from.

Despite their best efforts to extend the match through lengthy challenges in the endgame, the Lady Warriors still trailed by as many as 13 points, 24-11, before winger Barbie Jamilli mercifully ended the affair with a soft down-the-line push for the 25-12 finish.

UE veterans Van Bangayan and Khy Cepada paced the sorry descent to a 0-3 slate with 11 and 10 points respectively, as the Lady Warriors only mustered 5 excellent sets for the entire match compared to Adamson’s 19. – Rappler.com
